Winning Strategies
Here is another 'seminar,' on upwind racing.
Biggs' Bits
You have no doubt noticed that in our races the first one to round the first mark (the upwind mark) usually goes on to win. That is true for all sailing racing, I think. It is entirely possible to find better wind on a downwind run than the leader, and to pass him, and some of us have been known to sail into Mike's Hole (on the final, upwind leg) and sit while the fleet sails by, but most of the time, the first one around the first mark will go on to win the race.
A big reason for the first mark being so important is that it is difficult to sail fast upwind, so shakes out the fleet, but everyone can sail fast downwind.
A good start is also important. It is easier to hold the lead than to take it. And in sailboat racing where all the skippers are good at upwind sailing, a good start is even more important. On our pond, though, with our group of sailors, it is the upwind leg that is critical.
